★ Character Information ★
Character Name: Copenhagen AKA “Cope”
Character Age: 4 years
Character Species: Somali-mix cat
Current Health: Perfect, thank you for asking
Outfit: The most beautiful coat of ruddy fur

Character Canon: Original
Link to History: It all starts in Copenhagen, the capital (of Denmark, not in Sweden, stupid), where the human, Jane, Cope’s owner lived and worked. Volunteering at an animal shelter, she one day came face to face with a little, ruddy Somali-mix kitten that had been dumped on their doorstep, for reasons at first unknown. No one understood why such a beautiful cat had been turned in, until – by chance – Jane discovered that the cat, named Copenhagen, could understand and speak human fluently. Unsure whether to divulge this info, she eventually decided not to, knowing how people get with things they can’t explain and fearing for the little kitten’s future, so she instead made Cope promise only to speak around her while she applied for adoption. A month later, Cope was now Jane’s cat and moved in with her in her flat. Fast forward three years, and they have relocated to a smaller city in Denmark where Jane has set up an art shop as well as an Instagram for Cope who acts as her shop mascot. Also, as a true beauty, of course. She probably attracts more people to Jane’s shop than Jane’s art does, to be honest. Cope has furthermore developed an irritating habit of scaring off all Jane’s boyfriends, we’re counting about 99 at the moment, give or take, depending on definition, because – basically – she’s jealous and wants Jane all to herself. Get your own human, human.
Canon Point: One lovely spring morning, right before boyfriend #100 makes his sweeping entrance into Jane’s life; Cope is sleeping soundly, all is well.

★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills: Catching mice (although she’s an indoor kitty, Jane has no idea where those fucking critters come from) and spiders, purring really loudly when Jane is on the brink of sleep, kneading with her claws out, getting water everywhere when she drinks and avoiding medicine in her food. Life skills.
Canon Abilities: She can understand and talk human (which means, she doesn’t only speak Danish, but all human languages, when encountering them)
Role: Familiar
Role Qualities/Attributes: She will be able to turn into human form when she wants or needs to.
Role Reasoning: If we know cats right, they’re very jester-type animals who do not work with concepts of good and evil, but rather in neutral terms only known to themselves. Cope is a cat through and through and works in the same way. She can be the sweetest most empathetic little kitty one moment and a pain in the ass who makes diabolic plans to scare away Jane’s boyfriends the next. She works in the grey area between those two things. I would love to use her role qualities, her human form, as a way of making her realise her feelings for Jane back home and maybe to form a bond with a myth or a legend in-game.

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?
Being dumped at the animal shelter as a kitten was Cope’s most traumatic experience. No one, including herself, knows where she came from, a ruddy Somali-mix cat has never been reported missing, and Cope herself remembers nothing, her time before the shelter a blank space. She only knows she knew how to speak from the beginning and Jane, when she’s angry with Cope or they’re fighting, likes to say, Cope was dumped because she didn’t know how to shut up. Cope doesn’t like Jane when she’s angry, the implications hurt. The way her life started and the fact that she has no memory of any of it makes Cope very dependent on the only person to have ever truly cared about her and taken care of her, Jane. She’s clingy, possessive, jealous of anyone else who might carve a space in Jane’s life. She will literally fight to the death over her owner. Her friend. Her human. Her ??.

  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?
As such, Jane is the Only Person in Cope’s life. She can be charming and sweet with others, but the only human (or animal) she truly cares about is Jane. While Jane studied in Copenhagen, they lived in a loft and because she didn’t want to leave Jane’s side, she accepted being an indoor cat, although she sometimes sneaks out to find mice and confuse the hell out of her owner. These routines they have built together have become a defining part of their lives together, they work pretty much like an old married couple. Sleep in the same spots, at the same time, know each other’s likes and dislikes, can read each other’s thoughts more or less. Jane is caring, doesn’t make demands of her she can’t fulfil, still expects her to behave and believes she’s capable of good things. All these things that make Cope grow and want to do better. Sometimes she wishes she could be a human, too, so she could have Jane the way her boyfriends do. If she was aware what these feelings meant, this love and desire, she would also be okay with it being one-sided, but as it is, she knows nothing about human love. She simply feels it. Like she simply speaks human.

  • What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not?
Cope is a typical cat. She works for herself and on her own terms. She doesn’t see things as good or bad, but rather “beneficial for me” or “not beneficial for me”. This can lead to both “good” or “bad” results. It’s the same inclinations that make her snuggle Jane’s friend’s baby for an hour in his cradle that also make her set up a literal death trap for boyfriend #11. The two things are neither extremes in her mind, nor opposites. They just are. Jane disagrees, of course, and they have fights about that all the time, but Jane understands cats and she knows Cope is just abiding her nature. And because Jane understands, Cope tries to do the best she can. Not always good, but always dedicated.

  • If you could give your character a Taylor Swift playlist, which songs would be on it and what would they represent about your character?
Anti-Hero: This represents Cope’s moral codex and how the surrounding world responds to her choices and actions. While she doesn’t have many regrets, she generally dislikes having to take the conflicts that follow and she is always left with a feeling of Otherness, of being difficult and different and even unlovable, at the worst of times.
Shake It Off: This represents Cope’s general attitude to everything. Although she does experience the Otherness of not adhering to social norms, she is also a Cat and she lives day to day, waking up in the morning having shaken off the dust from the previous day, ready to start anew. Nothing stays with her for very long, except her grudges against people who make Jane sad (does that mean her, though??).
It’s Nice to Have A Friend: This represents her love for Jane and the feelings of security, belonging and found family that the human gives her. It’s a friendship song, but with an underlying current of romantic feelings and that pretty much describes Cope’s feelings to a T. Even if she isn’t aware of it yet.
